 Exit Collection :  Catholic Communications

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

On World Communications Day we pray for the Church's work proclaiming Good News & raising a voice in 'the market place'. We pray for our Bishops' Communications Dept and for the work of Communication in our own Diocese.

Exit Collection today is for the Catholic Communications Network (CCN) the Bishops' office for professional messaging & support for Bishops & the wider Church, for Gospel values in the media.

Our own Parish Communications Team has met for some months now, and a team member will share a word about this at the end of each Mass today.

Our Lady of Fatima (Monday) has had a worldwide devotional following since the apparitions to three children in 1917. Two of the children Francisco and Jacinta, died soon afterwards in the Spanish flu epidemic but are now declared saints. The third one Lucia died 2005 and last year Pope Francis declared her 'venerable' a first step on the path to sainthood.

St. Michael Garicoits' day Tuesday is the big feast of our Sacred Heart community. On this day in 1863 our founder went to the Lord, after a life of humble love and service. We invite you to join us for coffee and cake after 10.15 Mass.

St. Matthias the apostle chosen by lot to replace Judas, has a shrine in Trier, the only apostle buried in northern Europe. In most of the church, his day is May 14 but as St. Michael Garicoits takes precedence for us, we honour him May 15.

Pope John I (Saturday) deserves to be better known. Elected pope in 523, he tried to mediate between the Byzantine emperor and a belligerent Arian Roman emperor Theodoric, but was thrown into prison by Theodoric for his efforts. He died in a lonely prison cell, a martyr for peace, and faithful to the last.

May God bless you all.
